History
Our Vision
At Bowling Park, our history curriculum is designed to ensure that children understand how past events have shaped the world they live in today through engaging and exciting lessons and experiences. They are inspired to ask interesting questions about the past, developing a keen curiosity to know more. Through the study of both world and local history, children develop a sense of belonging so that they understand their place in society and the responsibility we have to learn from the past in order to contribute to a better world.
The history curriculum at Bowling Park ensures that children develop a rich knowledge of the periods and events studied, but it also allows children to build a mental schema, through the consistent revisiting of prior knowledge and opportunities to make connections. During their time at Bowling Park, children gain a deep understanding of the substantive concepts of power (monarchy, government and empire), migration, invasion, beliefs, civilisation and trade. By the end of KS2, children can discuss these concepts in relation to the different historical periods that they have studied.
Our Aims
Our history curriculum is designed to develop learners who:
- use accurate historical evidence from a range of sources to question their own and others' views, recognising and challenging injustice when it is encountered.
- debate, explore and analyse the past through their own historical enquiries.
- see themselves as enthusiastic and curious historians who show pride in the purposeful work they produce.
- have the vocabulary and range of experiences needed to confidently and succinctly express their substantive and disciplinary knowledge of a range of historical periods and events.
- confidently express their findings, ideas and opinions to others through oral and written communication.
- recognise the importance of history in shaping communities and nations, and our shared responsibility to learn from the mistakes of the past.
- see themselves as 'change-makers' who have the ability to make a difference to society.
- are ready to take on the world beyond Bowling Park in 21st century Britain with a knowledge of what has happened in the past and how this has shaped today’s society.
