Geography
Our Vision
At Bowling Park, we want to nurture and promote pupils’ natural curiosity. We aim to inspire a fascination in finding out about the world, its people and cultures through a creative, ambitious curriculum that embeds geography as a cross-curricular key driver. We want our students to develop the characteristics of a successful geographer so that they can effectively recognise and engage with their place in the world: locally, nationally, and globally.
Students develop their geographical knowledge and skills by: gaining an excellent knowledge of places and what they are like; developing an understanding of the ways in which places are interconnected and interdependent; having an extensive geographical vocabulary; becoming skilful at geographical enquiry; demonstrating fieldwork skills; and expressing opinions rooted in knowledge about current issues in society and the environment.
Bowling Park teachers provide the context in which children learn to conduct geographical enquiry. Children explore geography by: speculating, debating, making connections, selecting, collecting and analysing data, and developing and presenting conclusions.
At Bowling Park, the geography curriculum celebrates children’s own personal locality and roots whilst promoting respect for and curiosity about others. The content of our geography curriculum ensures coverage of the 2014 National Curriculum but also provides children with opportunities to explore their own environment and culture.
Our Aims
- Geography at Bowling Park should spark our students’ natural curiosity about the world around them (both locally and globally), through a creative, engaging and practical curriculum.
- Geography should be rooted in fieldwork wherever possible in order to spark student interest and foster a real-world experience.
- Students should be taught key geographical concepts, skills and knowledge that can be applied and have relevance to the whole-school curriculum.
- Students should be given the tools to develop the characteristics of a geographer and showcase their skills through exciting and engaging activities.
- Opportunities should be provided to allow geography to be meaningful, researching topics of interest, making use of the local environment and taking action on a cause.
- Students should be allowed agency to pursue a topic of interest related to conservation and sustainability.
