Computing

At Bowling Park, we know that we live in a world where advances in technology are changing rapidly. We want to prepare our children to be 'lifelong learners' with the confidence and ability to develop their computational skills and understanding when encountering new technology.

Children begin their computing journey within Early Years laying the foundations of computational thinking, by exploring different forms of technology in the world around them and through play. Their learning environment contributes to the development of these skills, and they should have access to suitable, up-to-date equipment and emerging technologies. As computing is becoming an increasing part of life in a modern world, it is essential that all pupils gain the confidence and skills they need in this subject, to prepare them for the challenge of a rapidly developing and changing technological world. The use of technology will also enhance and extend children’s learning throughout the wider curriculum whilst developing motivation and social skills.

The use of these technologies will enrich the experience of all children at Bowling Park, and these resources will help to provide an environment where opportunities can be explored in safety and with confidence. We support all our pupils and staff to be confident, competent, and independent users of ICT. The use of computing, where appropriate, will be used to motivate and inspire pupils and raise standards across the wider curriculum. Our pupil’s will develop their computing skills, knowledge, understanding and capability through taught computing lessons and will be provided with opportunities for pupils to apply and consolidate their capability across all curriculum areas. We will ensure that children are aware of the possible risks when using the internet and we teach pupils how to stay safe online through well-structured and thought-out e-safety lessons. Kapow Primary is used to support the delivery of the computing curriculum and children explore coding through the use of bee-bots, Scratch jr, Scratch, Micro:bits and Python. Kapow also supports children with their digital literacy and IT skills looking at how computers have advanced throughout the years and how technology plays a role in our daily lives through exploring how QR codes are used and how technology is used in space.
